As Malaysia gears up for the upcoming polls, some entrepreneurial and enthusiastic Malaysians have taken to selling politically-inspired items on Carousell, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing mobile classified marketplaces. Here are five quirky items we found on the marketplace to help stoke that election fever ahead of the upcoming 14th General Election:
Weighing around 3kg, a rare riding statue of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad is a masterpiece created and produced Wizart Studio Sdn Bhd out of respect for the former Prime Minister of Malaysia. One was later presented to Tun Dr Mahatir as a memento.
2) Vintage Merdeka Memorabilia
48-year- old political memorabilia collector Adrian Ung started collecting since 1997 and now counts over 200 items in his collection ranging from books, statements, mugs, plaques, newspapers, flyers and posters. Fascinated by its nostalgic value, he continues to scout across the world for priceless Malaysian political memorabilia.
“I have always been fascinated by vintage items. I zoomed in on Merdeka and Malaya-era items as they are scarce, especially to Malaysians. I normally find the older pieces more interesting, which is why I normally collect items from the 50s to 80s era or earlier. I hunt for them online and in flea markets all over Malaysia & Singapore,” said Adrian (Carousell Store: nicimeow)
3) 14-karat Gold UMNO Ring
It is always exciting to be associated with politics, but keeping a 14-karat gold ring by a political party is also pretty cool and a great way to show your support for the party. The ring is currently on sale on Carousell for RM1,800.
Akmal bin Azman, 21, (Carousell Store: akmalazmn) said, “This UMNO ring belongs to a collector friend of mine who was looking for an avenue to sell some of his private collection. Carousell has helped us to sell many of our items and it soon forged a partnership between us. It became a revenue generator for us. This rare and unique 14-karat gold UMNO ring will be one of our most precious possession sold on Carousell, and we hope that it would soon find a new owner.”
4) 1990’s Undi Barisan Nasional Poster
This rare old poster written in Jawi, probably for the rural North, is one of only two posters that the seller has.
“I have two pieces of this poster – one for me and one for my dad. It is hard to find pieces of history in mint condition. I am selling it now as I want to give others and opportunity to earn this rare memorabilia,” said Muhammad Hazim Bin Mohd Ridzuan. (Carousell Store: genuineforless)
5) Najib Razak and Khairy Jamaluddin Inspired Cupcakes for Sale!
Nurfazlyana Shahira bt Mohd Rosli partnered bakers to produce these Najib Razak colada jackfruit buns and Khairy Jamaluddin chocolate cupcakes which would make unique gifts for Malaysians.
“Cupcakes are one of the desserts that have no boundaries when it comes to creativity. Creating a series of cupcakes inspired by political figures such as our Prime Minister and our Youth and Sports Minister help bring more attention to our political scene and the potential of Malaysia’s culinary creativity. I hope that Malaysians will enjoy the richness of our politics, just like our cupcakes.” (Carousell Store: fazly_ana)
